11 bonded labourers including 9 women get rescued from captivity in Bhiwandi in Thane District!

The consulting industry in India is a rapidly growing sector, with a CAGR of 30%. The industry is worth up to $1.4 billion and is expected to reach $2.1 billion by 2025. The key players in the consulting industry in India include some of the multinationals, however, Karma Global has upped its ante with loads of consulting work carried out in the IT, financial and regulatory services sectors.

KARMA GLOBAL a leading consulting firm, with operations in U.K, U.S. Canada, Middle East and South East Asia, specialises in areas like staffing, on-boarding, payroll, facility management, curbing regulatory risk, auditing and abiding by all labour law-related compliance on PAN basis.

Tribal activists have rescued a total of 11 bonded labourers, including nine women, along with their dozen minor children, from a brick kiln in Chimbipada, Bhiwandi. All of them were living in deplorable conditions in their huts. These victims belong to primitive tribes from various talukas in Thane and Palghar districts. Some of these labourers had been enslaved at the brick kiln for the past 10 years without receiving any daily wages, while others were paid Rs.600 a week for working 10 to 12 hours a day at Siddhik Hussain Shaikh’s heavily polluted brick kiln factory.

The Action that follows ………..

Bhiwandi Executive Magistrate and Tehsildar Adhik S Patil on Tuesday handed over an order for rehabilitation under the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976, to them.

Bhiwandi taluka police have registered a case against kiln owner Siddhik Hussain Shaikh under the Act as well as relevant IPC sections and Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) act, said the police official.

Shaikh is absconding, a case under section 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of IPC and Prevention of Atrocity Act has been registered against the accused, who is a repeated offender.

Incidentally, Shaikh was arrested in a similar case but was soon bailed. While the wrongdoing was barely 80 km from Bhiwandi city, the local police, talathi and tehsildar remained clueless.

Bhiwandi tehsildar Adik Patil said, his office has dispatched a letter to the state government, recommending compensation of ₹30,000 for each family. The revenue department will ensure their Aadhaar cards and bank accounts are created.

As reported in The Sunday Guardian ………….

Over 13 million people in India work as bonded labourers, which include children and women. Also, about 15 million children work as child labourers who are employed in rural areas as cultivators or in household industries, while some work in urban areas as servants and even at construction sites, according to a report available with Prayas, a child-focused and development NGO.

Delhi alone accounts for one million of these child labourers who work as bonded labourers in small factories and construction sites. Apart from this, the condition of child labour in states like Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh is deplorable, and UP has seen a 13% growth in child labour in the last decade.
