The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) under the supervision of the Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India has announced the enhancement of Ex gratia Death Relief Fund amount to Rs. 8 lakhs in the event of death of an employee of the Central Board due to Non -Covid-19 (normal death).

The amount of the Ex-gratia Death Relief Fund has been increased from Rs. 4.20 lakh to Rs. 8.00 lakh.

EPFO has said in an official statement issued on 2nd November 2021 that “The, ex-gratia Death Relief Fund of Rs. 8.00 Lakh (Rs. Eight Lakh only) shall be paid to the family members (nominee or legal heirs) of the deceased employee of the Central Board from the Welfare Fund where the cause of death is other than Covid-19 Disease.”

EPFO members should keep in their mind that the instructions shall come into force with immediate effect and will be applicable to only prospective cases i.e. cases where the date of death is after the date of issue of this circular.

As we discussed above that the ex-gratia Death Relief Fund shall be paid to the family members (nominee or legal heirs) of the deceased employee, it is also important for the PF subscribers to file their nomination by today itself. They can file an e-Nomination today online through UAN, to ensure social security for their family/nominee. For this, they can log in to the UAN portal and make a self-declaration and no documentation or approval is required by the employer.

According to EPFO filing e-Nomination online helps in getting Provident Fund (PF), Pension (EPS) and Insurance (EDLI) benefits easily on member’s death. This implies that EPF members should file their e-Nomination as soon as possible and for this, they can visit www.epfindia.gov.in
