Five Tips On Turning Failure into Success

FORBES BUSINESS COUNCIL

Associating failure with successful people can be very difficult. To think that any reputable entrepreneur could have had a series of failures seems impossible. Some might assume that they have always been that way. However, these people, like many others, have gone through hard times of rejection, denial, failure, even fear, but they did not give up. A difficult aspect to recognize for many people, even those who are successful, is the importance of failure. The reality is that failure is an indispensable part of the success of many entrepreneurs.

However, knowing how to move on from failure is what can distinguish a successful person from others. How is this possible? How can failure be turned into a step toward success? It is not a simple task, but it is not impossible either.

Here are five tips that can help turn failure into success.

  1. Face fear head-on.

It is important to put your goals and objectives above any fears. A practice that I personally consider indispensable is to analyse my skills and strengths, rather than my weaknesses and mistakes. This helps me focus on what I am good at and find ways to leverage it to improve my business.

It might seem counterintuitive, but in order to face fear, it is necessary to get as far away from your comfort zone as possible. Avoid staying in one place out of fear of moving forward. Learn to be comfortable in any situation.

Perhaps above all, don’t forget the reason you started. Let that continue to motivate you. If you already dared to start, then keep the focus on your motivation. This way you will always be clear about the reason to continue.

  1. Take a break.

Even if things don’t work out, it’s not the end. With every failed attempt, it is necessary to stop, analyse what happened and accept the mistakes made. Analyse what you have learned from the situation, how it transforms your life and how it helps you continue on your path.

A failed attempt does not make you a failed person; on the contrary, it makes you human. Accept the consequences and learn from them. One question I always ask myself after a mistake is, “What was or is my purpose?” This helps me to regain clarity in my thoughts. Later, I can start to come up with new ideas based on the objectives.

During this downtime or shortly after, create an action plan as this is a key element in moving forward after a failed attempt or an error. You will probably feel lost, so this tool could help you establish a proper route and move forward.

  1. Continue to set goals.

Failure can be paralyzing. It often slows down your actions and intentions to carry out new projects — that is, if you let that experience control your life. How can you stop that from happening? Continue to set specific goals. Spend time, organize your activities and focus on the results you want to achieve.

It is important that your goals are achievable. Be sure to outline possible goals and plan actions that will lead to them. On the other hand, try to be prepared to adjust or change some things in the process, this will allow you to get better results.

  1. Stay focused

In addition to setting goals, you need to stay focused on them, on what you ultimately want to accomplish and on how each action you take will get you on your way to the goal. This way, when you are faced with a situation of failure, it will be easier to get up and get back on track.

Above all, I consider gradual planning to be fundamental. Carrying out one task at a time allows for greater results to be achieved. If you keep working on different things at the same time, you are likely to end up more exhausted and with minimal results.

Don’t give up what you want because of the first failed attempt. Your attitude will define your progress. Don’t see failure as a negative thing. Try to find new ways to carry out your ideas. If the first one doesn’t work, learn from what happened and move forward.

  1. Fail as a team.

Finding a partner or colleague to work with can be helpful in many ways, especially when faced with failure. Someone else will bring a different perspective to the experience, what went wrong at the time, and above all, how to improve in the future. But what should you look for in a partner?

A partner is a person who completes your process. If that person has skills that can strengthen yours and vice versa, it will allow you to become a more powerful team. Although you may not always agree on the same procedures, maintaining a similar vision will lead you to work for the same results. Be sure to choose someone with this characteristic. Remember that it’s about achieving goals and growing. Therefore, a partner must be a person you can trust at all times.

Failure is an experience and as such, it forms, enriches and prepares you for future scenarios. It provides life lessons that, in many ways, influence your behaviour later on. It allows us to renew ideas, refresh concepts and rethink options. Ultimately, it is an opportunity to get up and try again.

Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart.

It requires passion, perseverance, the ability to take risks. and the very real possibility of failure. Many successful entrepreneurs have experienced setbacks and failures along the way, but they have also learned from these experiences and used them as opportunities to grow and improve.

Take Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple. In 1985, Jobs was forced to resign from Apple, the company he co-founded, due to internal conflicts. He went on to start a new company, NeXT, which was not initially successful. However, he eventually returned to Apple and led the company to tremendous success, introducing revolutionary products such as the iPod, iPhone, and iPad.

Another example is J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series. Before becoming a bestselling author, Rowling struggled with depression and was living on welfare. She received countless rejections from publishers before finally finding success with her beloved series. Today, the Harry Potter franchise is worth billions of dollars and has inspired a devoted global fan base.

Failure is almost necessary to teach us how to succeed — what to do better next time.

Similarly, entrepreneur Jeremy Dougherty faced near failure in getting his outdoor fashion apparel company Maroon Bell Outdoor off the ground.

Eight months after investing his life’s savings into the company in 2016, he nearly lost it all. “In our first year, we got scammed by a clothing manufacturer in LA. My entire line of flannels never showed up for Christmas, which was my only product at the time,” Dougherty recalls.

Dougherty, a Denver native, envisioned an apparel brand that would solve what he believed to be a problem for outdoor enthusiasts: finding clothes that could endure the outdoors and make you look good.

He did not let his first failure brand himself or his business. Rather, he maintained focus on his vision and figured out a solution to achieve it.

Here are some things he learned along the way:

  1. Commit to a Solution, No Matter How You Feel

Considering it was his first year, it would have been easy for Dougherty to close up shop and look for another opportunity.

Instead, he committed to finding a solution to the problem. He pieced together the ideas for a new driving glove made out of buffalo leather. The inspiration came to him while jogging one day.

The Buffalo Leather Gloves became the company’s best-selling product and his story has inspired many.

  1. Visualize Success

Being able to overcome his initial failure convinced Dougherty that anything was possible if he could simply visualize it as so, a mind-set he learned after reading the 1937 business book masterpiece, Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill.

The idea of envisioning every detail of the life he was hoping for sparked an interest in Dougherty that has persisted for more than a decade. He attributes much of his success as an entrepreneur to his ability to visualize his outcome.

“What I have discovered is something of a fairy tale,” Dougherty says. “I experienced what feels like magic sometimes. The missing link was comprehensive visualization. What happens when you visualize very specific details over a long period is that you essentially brainwash your mind and turn it into a reality.”

  1. Stay Forward-Facing

Visualizing success in a business model that you haven’t proven yet can seem foolish, but Dougherty compares it to getting a flat tire on a road trip.

“If you were driving from Colorado to California and you had a flat tire, would you stop, set up shop, and live in that space forever?” he asks.

“The answer is easy because we know that California exists. We don’t have to visualize it. Starting a company is no different except for the fact that we have to visualize the destination.”.

Dougherty attributes patience, work-life balance, and genuine partnerships to his company’s recent success.

  1. Patience

Understand that success does not come overnight and be willing to put in the time and effort needed to see your vision come to fruition. Remain focused and persistent, even in the face of setbacks and challenges.

  1. Work-life Balance

Prioritize your well-being and the well-being of your team. Recognize the importance of a healthy work-life balance and make an effort to create a positive and supportive work environment.

  1. Genuine Partnerships

Value collaboration and partnership with your team, clients, and partners. Build strong, trusting relationships and work to create a sense of community within your organization.
