Type: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in Mumbai issued notices to shop owners who did not have signboards in the Marathi language.

Pertains to   All Shops and Establishments covered under the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai

The Maharashtra shops commercial establishments act 2017 came into force on December 20, 2017, and successfully replaced the 1948 Maharashtra Shops and Establishment Act

Further, an amendment was introduced by the Ministry on March 17, 2022, wherein certain specifications were highlighted wrt font size, etc. for the existing display related compliance.

Further, on June 06, 2022, a circular  was issued by Brihan Municipal Corporation (BMC) wherein shops and establishments under the jurisdiction of BMC are required to comply with the following points by June 30, 2022

  • All Commercial establishments should display their Nameboard in Marathi written in Devanagri script and if the signboard displays the name of any shop or business in more than one language, the one in Devanagari should be in bigger font size.
  • The name board should be displayed in the Marathi language in front of the establishment.
  • The font size should not be smaller than in any other language and should be in Marathi.
  • All the Establishments where liquor is severed or sold must not bear the names of legendary personalities and historical forts.

In this instance, Karma Management does a lot of work for its clients who are covered by the  Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act, all the obligations are fulfilled including the filing of returns and maintenance of registers.  Here again, it has advised all its clients about this amendment and compliance with the signboard in Marathi.

More than 500  shops get notices over Marathi name boards

MUMBAI: The BMC has issued 522 notices to shops and established Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service Act, 2017 with regard to name boards of the Shops and Establishments.

BMC Officials visited as many as 2158 Establishments across the city on Monday and found 522 Shops and Establishments violating the rules with regard to names.

An amendment by the State to the Act had made it mandatory even for Shops and Establishments having less than 10 workers to have their name in Marathi at the beginning on the name board and in a font size equal to other languages.  The BMC had given time for compliance but the Shops and Establishments Department found that establishments were not complying with the amendment.
